The Ivory Sea

Rolling and churning like so much ocean foam (not that anyone would know what an ocean is), an all-obscuring blanket of clouds rises to meet the horizon. This is The Ivory Sea, a strata of high-pressure atmosphere above which all known civilization lives on floating islands.

Ancient accounts and half-slurred stories tell of a time beyond memory when people existed beneath those impenetrable masses of vapor, but now diving below the surface is a pastime for only the daring or the desperate. Not only is the increased air pressure combined with the oppressive humidity a trial for human lungs, most ships were not designed to operate effectively under those harsh conditions, running the risk of being dragged under the air currents  never to resurface again.
